Controversy

Canadians Running to the Seaway

The controversy that surrounded the Raid at Dieppe was whether it was a viable plan or not since so many lives were lost for no clear advantage. The entire mission was plagued from the beginning and was over by early afternoon. Roughly 1500 Canadians were killed or wounded and 2,000 were taken as prisoners of war. Supporters of the raid say that it helped lay the ground work for the invasion of Normandy in 1944. Although others would say that the raid was not worth its high cost, was poorly planned and ignored intelligence.  Despite this dispute, there is no question about the courage of the men who fought in the battle. These men displayed great valor against overwhelming odds.
